This season, the York Chamber Ensemble invites you on a journey through centuries of musical brilliance—from the elegance of the Classical era to the rhythmic fire of the Spanish tradition. Featuring masterworks, exciting soloists, and choral collaborations, the 2025–2026 season offers a rich tapestry of sound, emotion, and history.
The season opens on October 18, 2025, with Mozart’s lively Overture to Così fan tutte, a sparkling curtain-raiser full of wit and charm from his comic opera of love and mistaken identities. Chopin’s Piano Concerto No. 2, composed when he was just 20 years old, follows—an early Romantic gem brimming with lyricism and delicate virtuosity, performed by the gifted Joanne Yeh, winner of the Unionville Music Competition. The program concludes with Beethoven’s Symphony No. 1, a bold debut symphony that both honors and challenges the Classical traditions of Haydn and Mozart.
On November 23, 2025, and December 7, 2025 the York Chamber Ensemble joins forces with the Tapestry Chamber Choir and Lyrica Chamber Choir for Handel’s Messiah, one of the most beloved and enduring choral works in the repertoire. With its dramatic arias, resounding choruses, and radiant orchestration, this performance promises to be a highlight of the season and a meaningful start to the festive season.
The spring concert on March 28, 2026, brings together three masterful composers at the height of their creativity. Mendelssohn’s String Symphony No. 10, written when he was only 14, reveals a precocious grasp of form and expression. George Enescu’s Dixtuor for Winds—a rarely performed jewel—blends late-Romantic richness with folkloric energy in a lush and expansive sound world. Finally, Mozart’s Violin Concerto No. 3, known for its graceful themes and refined elegance, will feature Veronica Zupanic, whose expressive playing brings fresh vitality to this classical favourite.
The season concludes on May 9, 2026, with a dazzling Spanish-inspired celebration. The York Chamber Ensemble will perform selections from Isaac Albéniz, whose music evokes the vivid landscapes of Andalusia; Manuel de Falla, whose Danza ritual del fuego ignites with intensity and colour; and Arturo Márquez, whose popular Danzón No. 2 pulses with the sensual rhythms of Veracruz. The centrepiece is Joaquín Rodrigo’s Concierto de Aranjuez, a deeply expressive and iconic work for guitar and orchestra, performed by internationally renowned guitarist Jeffrey McFadden.
From youthful genius to cultural celebration, the York Chamber Ensemble’s 2025–2026 season offers something for every listener—familiar classics, rarely heard treasures, and unforgettable performances.
